Wings, Talons, Shells, and Surprise!

The Crystal Winged Dragon, a nearly two-foot-long artistic plaything with wings that move up and down and a spine that bends as though to imitate a dragon’s sinewy moves, is the latest creation rolling off a large 3D printer at New Mischief Creations. The family-owned shop in Benson is readying their delightful turtles, slugs, stackable star shapes, and dragons to bring to the Starbuck Vintage & Artisan Market. “I have always loved nuts and bolts and making things,” says Danita Newman, a passion she now shares with teenage daughters Jade and Lali.

“Jade has been designing this year,” says Danita. “We’ll have a line she’s created called the ‘Suit of Snakes.’” Jade’s inventive designs incorporate hearts, clubs, spades, and diamonds into the snakes’ bodies, creating a realistic yet playful version of the slithering reptile. “We’ll also have butterfly dragons, frogs, and all sorts of mythical creatures.” New Mischief Creations is also experimenting with a few Dungeons & Dragons staples: dice, dice towers, and mini figures. Also new this year: 3D-printed earrings and key chains.

New Mischief Creations uses a plant-based plastic for their playthings. "The plastic is quite durable but biodegradable, making the products we're creating easier on the environment," says Danita. Between Danita, Jade, and Lali—and in collaboration with 3D designers Cinderwing3D and Layers in Green—new pieces are constantly taking shape on a 3D printer before finding new homes with happy children, toy collectors, and printing enthusiasts enamored by their designs. Each piece is fully articulated with parts that move. The sturdy creations come in bright, playful colors and several sizes.

At the market, Newman will hand paint pieces as requested and encourage children to paint their new creations with brushes and paints provided. Also new this year, a claw machine for capturing a new and unique 3D plaything—perfect for kids and grandkids coming to the market.
